If you trek all the way down to Downtown Manhattan, you will find Modnitsa Atelier, a unique jewelry design studio created to teach the skill to crafters of all levels.
“I’m very passionate about helping you develop a unique & authentic design aesthetic and learn the basics of jewelry construction so you can continue to make jewelry at home,” said Modnitsa Atelier Owner Dina Scherer.
Scherer is no stranger when it comes to design and fashion. She said she is very passionate about different style elements like color, texture and details. For her, jewelry making is an art, and she teaches her students to see it as just that.
Whether you’re looking to learn the ropes of jewelry making, or you’ve been making your own necklaces, bracelets and earrings for years, there’s a class for everyone here. Scherer said she is there to guide you every step of the way with detailed instruction and assistance. She also breaks everything down into small steps, especially for the beginner classes, so no one feels like they’re missing a beat.
“We start by choosing the ideal colors to create your piece – as color is my absolute favorite element of design,” she said. “We talk about various design tools and materials, stone meanings and how you can combine all those elements to create unique and stunning jewelry.”
A class at Modnitsa Atelier typically lasts for about an hour and a half. During this time, participants receive an overview of tools and materials, as well as learn how to put together different stones to make a design. So, there’s more of a science to it, than just stringing a bunch of beads together.
“What makes Modnitsa Atelier classes a unique workshop experience is that every class is tailored to encompass design, color theory, construction basics and creativity,” Scherer said.
After only an hour and a half, she said you’ll be a walk away with a unique and completed design and piece of jewelry.
Workshops and classes range in different levels from beginner to advanced, and some cover specific skills. If you can’t find the time to get to one of her classes, she recently launched and online jewelry design video series to reach out to a bigger audience.
In the beginner classes, you can expect to learn the basics, like using wire and other tools to create simple earrings and necklaces.
If you’re beyond the basics, the intermediate level course will build on that knowledge, taking the designs a step further and fancier with pieces like cluster earrings and chain & stone necklaces according to Scherer. She said it’s all about furthering your creativity and sharpening your design skills at this point.
For those who are not new to jewelry making, Scherer said the advanced workshops cover topics like “multi-chain clusters” and “multi-strand necklaces.” Aside from this, her “Specific Skills” classes, just like their name, focus on a specific skill, (like hair accessories, watches and charm bracelets) you might be interested in learning, rather than an overview of everything. She currently offers 15 Specific Skill classes, so there’s always more to learn.
“The goal is to help each student develop a unique & authentic design aesthetic and learn the basics of jewelry construction so they can continue to make jewelry at home,” said Scherer.
Whether you’re planning a birthday party, bachelorette party, a night-out or a team building experience, Modnitsa Atelier can work with you to make that happen.
For those who are really into the craft, she also offers unique “Stones and Findings Shopping Tours.” On these tours, you and other students will have a chance to conquer New York’s Bead District’s jewelry stores with Scherer’s guidance to select the perfect beads and stones for your style. Even better is the fact that you’ll benefit from some great wholesale discounts in the meantime.
Whatever workshop you chose to take, Scherer believes each one offers a “fun, creative and unique experience” for her students and that they will leave with a design that reflects their own personality and style. Classes range in price from $30 to $100 depending on whether the course is online or in person, and what type of course it is. Private event prices depend on the size of your group, but she can accommodate groups ranging from 5 to 20 people.
“Making jewelry is part building up muscle memory, which comes with practice, and part discovery – when you put different stones and colors together to create inspiring and surprising combinations, so I think there is no limit to what can be created, and it’s a craft anyone can explore,” she said.
